This was a peaceful paradise for relaxing on the beach or in the pool. We also enjoyed the pristine accommodation, and the succulent feasts at the restaurants.

We will be back very soon.

Here are some things to know before staying at Bougainvillea Beach Resort. Visited: April 2008
Posted by mikep
We traveled here with two of our daughters (15 & 17), and stayed in the studios. The hotel had a great position next to the beach, and it is very pretty. It also had good room facilities.

Although there were lots of sporting facilities listed, due to the height of the surf, some of these were not very feasible (and some were not free).

The children’s playroom was buried in the bowels of the hotel, and was completely empty. Games like pool were chargeable, and would be very popular if they were free.

Both restaurants were very quiet, and almost empty by 8:30 pm. Lanterns by the Sea was okay, but not great.

Lunch times seemed to be the busiest with takeaways popular for the beach. The weekly BBQ was good, but evening entertainment generally suffered from lack of atmosphere. We dined out most evenings, and particularly liked Bellini's Italian Restaurant at St. Lawrences Gap for outstanding pasta dishes.

Budget about $7.50 each way to St. Lawrence Gap, about $10 to Oistins, and about $17.50 to Bridgetown each way for taxis.

We tried the island tour, catamaran day trip, Atlantis Submarine, and Scuba Diving. All were excellent. The catamaran anchors for lunch at the beach next to the five-star Sandy Lane Hotel, and you can swim to shore after eating.

If we visited Barbados again, we would probably go all-inclusive to the west coast for a quieter ocean to swim in, and ability to make full use of sporting facilities. Also, the general area is prettier than the South Coast region.

This was Spring Break heaven. Visited: March 2008

I chose Bouganvillea Beach Resort based on a CNN travel article and further research on websites like this one. It was, indeed, very family friendly, and most of the other guests were return visitors of many years.

The staff just about kissed our feet, and they couldn't have been nicer. The bell men took care of me through a case of rum flu. The cabana boys were to die for.

The web site reviews were correct in that the restaurant was eminently passable. We got cold sandwiches there on our first day, and tried the buffet one night. The rest of the time we either cooked in our room kitchenette with supplies from the Gap mini-mart, or ate out.

Our neighbors had a full kitchen. We only regret missing Friday night in Oustins.

Duty free shopping on Barbados was jewelry, and the hotel had jewelry shows on site.

They also offered entertainment nightly by the pool and during the day on weekends.

We were very lucky on the weather, and had good body surfing the entire week. I didn't realize that it was the surfing capital of the Caribbean area. It could have been rougher. Be sure to bring SPF50.

We booked the "Heatwave" sail/snorkel trip off the hotel web site and had so much fun, we did it again the next day. The crew was up, appropriate for each group each day, and made the trip special for each guest.

My niece is already planning to return with her parents next Spring Break, and I think they are more than willing, based on our experience. I am ready to go again tomorrow. I am still wondering why I left.

I wish when people write reviews, they would write about the resort and not construction. There was a new condo project on the beach, but it had nothing to do with the Bougainvillea. I feel it is very unfair that a hotel gets a bad review over something that is temporary and is not in their control.

That said, I must say that the Bougainvillea was great hotel. The suite 5329 on two floors was outstanding. I stayed at the Ritz Carlton Pasadena for Labor Day, and The Ritz was lacking in every department. I was very happy with the Bougainvillea.

The construction should go on for at least six months, and there was noise during the day. I think by spring, all the noise will be gone.

Still, this was one of the nicest boutique hotels in Barbados.

I suggest you avoid this place at all costs. Visited: February 2006

This was our tenth visit to the island - and the first ever to have a poor holiday.

The hotel itself was pleasant enough. The rooms were big, with nice views. However, the sofa bed was very uncomfortable, the air conditioning was noisy, and the fridge was ancient.

The main issue for us was the construction site next door. It was very loud every day except Sunday. They started at 7:00 am, and finished around 6:00 pm. Also, the fumes from the lorries and cranes were unbearable.

We asked to be moved, and it took five days for them to do so. By that time, we were extremely upset. The banging and clattering could be heard on the beach and by the pool, too. There was no escaping it.

We thought the staff attitude (apart from the bar staff) was awful. They seemed rude, disinterested, and very unhelpful. Bar service was slow, but then - it is Barbados. The guys there were very friendly.

I would really avoid this place!

It was a nice place, but beware of construction noise. Visited: February 2006

The resort was lovely. The beach was just right, and overall, the people were friendly.

However, we were placed in Unit 5 near major construction. It was literally just out our window. Not only were the noises incredibly loud starting at 7:00 am and going until dark, but the fumes from the equipment were horrific. We were never moved to any other unit, where I am told the noise level was more tolerable.

The sad thing was, we paid top dollar for our deluxe suite, and were never informed by the hotel that we would be placed in this type of noisy environment. We booked directly with the resort, so we did not have the same power as our neighbors who called their travel agents and were then moved.

The resort in and of itself, was nice...just avoid the noise if you want any kind of relaxing peace!

Bougainvillea was relaxing and friendly, and had a beautiful beach. Visited: October 2005

From the moment we entered the reception area, we knew we were in Paradise. The beach was fantastic, the pools were fantastic, and the watersports were fantastic. The staff was extremely friendly, also.

The rooms were very nice. Although, the kitchen in the deluxe apartment was very small.

There were two restaurants, and both were very good. Although, the Waterfront was definitely superior. The pool bar was quite small, but all the staff were great. I could not fault the reception staff or the watersport guys - all were really friendly and helpful, as I was on my own.

I can't wait to come back here.

From the moment we arrived at Bougainvillea, we were treated like family. The staff was happy and courteous, and couldn't seem to do enough for us.

The apartments were extremely comfortable and thoroughly clean. The kitchen was a little dated, but we weren't here for cooking!

On occasions, the sea was a little rough, but the whole ambience of the Bougainvillea Resort was unique.

We have been to Barbados on three other occasions staying at various locations, but we loved Bougainvillea so much we are coming back September 2006!

We won't stay at the Bougainvillea again! Visited: July 2005
Posted by jdgsmith
We stayed at the Bougainvillea from July 2-9th it was ok. This was our first time in Barbados. The hotel was beautiful and clean. Our room was a very large one bedroom and spacious with a good view. Maids cleaned our room everyday and it was always sparkling clean. The hotel restaurant was expensive and not very good. The breakfast was the worst. There is a convenience store a few steps away and we bought a lot of our supplies there.

We did have one major problem at the hotel. One night, there was a reception going on at the hotel restaurant. There was loud music and dancing. It wasn't a big deal until it started getting later and later and the group began to get louder and very rowdy. We wanted to go to sleep because we had a busy day ahead of us. I called the front desk to ask when the party would be over. They assured me that the manager was taking care of it because they had other complaints. Soon after that, the group of people were even louder. They started screaming and yelling and jumping into the pool and throwing each other in the pool. The sound echoes across the resort. I called the front desk again and was told that the noise would stop soon. Well, the noise didn't stop for another hour! I went to the desk and talked to the manager in person. She didn't seem too concerned at all. I suggest that of you want a quiet peaceful family resort try somewhere else.

Also, there are people hounding the beach disturbing you and trying to sell you everything from jewelry to illegal drugs. The water was rough and not good for snorkeling.

There were many things to see and do around the island. The most memorable was snorkeling with the sea turtles and seeing the Bajan Green Monkeys at the Wildlife Reserve. We didn’t have any trouble finding good food to eat around the island. Try the macaroni pie! Yum! We took an Adventureland 4X4 off road tour. It was a lot of fun and we got to see different things that we couldn’t have seen otherwise.

We did rent a car for the week. We rented from Drive-A-Matic and didn’t have any problems, except getting lost once. It was much nicer that getting a taxi. Although, there seemed to always be taxis waiting everywhere.

Needless to say, we will not be staying at the Bougainvillea again! The hotel was neat and clean, but did not seem four star worthy. It was not worth what we paid!

Bougainvillea Beach is a very nice accommodation with nice people! Visited: April 2005
Posted by kdstark
We stayed at the Bougainvillea Beach Resort from April 13-23, 2005 in a one-bedroom suite.

It was pretty much like condo living. The rooms were very nice and clean. The resort was always clean. The food at the Lanterns by the Sea was always good.

Best of all was the staff. From the front desk and bell boys to the bar/restaurant staff and cleaning staff, all were great people.

Bougainvillea was close to the St. Lawrence Gap for optional dining, and the beach was great. The resort was quiet at night, but if you are looking for excitement just go to the Gap. On a few nights during the week, the resort had entertainment and these were worth staying and watching.

I would definitely return.

This was the best trip I've ever taken. Visited: March 2005

Right when I walked into the reception area, all I could think about was "Wow, this is the most beautiful hotel ever!".

I stayed in a room with a hot tub on the balcony, the water flowed out making a waterfall into the pool. They had the best staff here, too.

The beach had a pinkish tint to it, the Gap had awesome bars and restaurants. I also went on a Jolly Roger, a big pirate ship/rum cruise.

All in all, this was the best trip ever. I'm thinking of coming back in September.

What a great place to stay for our first trip to Barbados! Visited: February 2005

We have just come back from a two-week stay at Bougainvillea Resort. We found the apartment very well furnished and very comfortable. There were two ceiling fans and air conditioning that worked, which was just as well as it was really hot every day.

The beach was fine, no problems with beach vendors, and plenty of sun beds, although sun shades were hard to get hold of if you left it too late.

The staff was excellent and very friendly. The pool bar staff was not the quickest or very talkative, though.

We only ate at Lanterns by the Sea on our last day for lunch, and it was served after about 20 minutes and was fine. We ate in the Gap every night. Our favorite restaurant was Harlequin. We ate there on our last night and it really could not be faulted, but book at least the night before, it’s very popular.

We took the island jeep safari and had a wonderful time. The drivers were really fun and made for a great day. We had a nice lunch stop and plenty of rum punch!

All in all, it was a really great holiday. The hotel was great and we would certainly come here again.

Would never stay here again Visited: January 2005
Posted by msty3
I would never stay here again. This is a 2 star property charging 4 star prices. When we arrived, our room (1 bedroom deluxe) was not ready and none of our requests (high floor, ocean view and 2 beds) were honored. The guy checking us in grinned mockingly when telling us we'd only have one bed.

We had ants in the kitchen and living room; a few times I noticed one on my plate or glass; the door handle in the bathroom was barely hanging on; you had to slam doors to close them securely; doors creaked like in an old house; furnishings mediocre; and worst of all the staff (other than the maids) acted like it was a huge imposition when asked for the smallest thing, including cashing travelers checks. They also hoard the towels like they are gold nuggets.

The watersports guys were lazy - I never got an umbrella one day I asked for one and when I asked him to bring us 3 chairs, even though we were still well within the hotel beach, we were told it was 'too far' and we'd have to carry them back ourselves. THe service and value for the $ was simply very poor here compared to similar properties I've stayed at.

Worst of all though was the CONSTANT HARASSMENT on the hotel beach not only by people selling things but also by guys who were simply trolling. They were rude, vulgar and hard to get rid of. I was told to 'f off' and to 'get an f'ing life' when I told them to leave us alone. Any single woman who was reasonably attractive was fair game. The hotel manager said many girls go off with them so they've come to expect you to say yes. Hotel security just stood there looking at these guys for the longest time before finally running them off but they were back again the next day.

ONe man was clearly drunk and was grabbing people by the arm on the beach trying to get $ for drawing their picture. When I told him to go away or I'd call security, he said 'I am security'. He was even bothering women who were walking with their husbands! If I wanted to put up with this BS I'd go back to Jamaica. The hotel's attitude is 'it's a public beach, we can't do anything'. nice

Water here is not rough; it's wavy with swells and 1-2 foot waves breaking on shore but you can get over them. Definitely swimmable but if you want totally calm flat ocean you'll be disappointed.

It was a nice place, but service and food choices were medium to poor Visited: January 2005
Posted by bob_king10
I just got back yesterday from Bougainvillea. The room was nice enough with a full sized refrigerator and cooking area. The front desk and bell staff were very courteous and efficient throughout our stay.

However, the pool bar and restaurant service was barely acceptable at best. Examples: 1. At the pool bar with two bartenders working and three customers there, it would still take a very long wait to get a drink. Incredibly slow, I would say. There seemed to be a very apathetic attitude amongst the staff.

2.Only one restaurant was open for breakfast and lunch, and it usually took from one to as much to two hours to be given a table(even when it was half empty), then receive a menu, order, etc.

Everything was a huge process. To top it off, the food was acceptable at best. There was no such thing as an outdoor grill or raw bar, so we were very limited. I would recommend going to the supermarket and stocking up for breakfast and lunch.

One day, after ordering room service, I was told "We'll bring it as soon as it stops raining." - and it never came. I called back an hour later and was told "I'm new on my shift and the kitchen is closed now."

For dinner, I would recommend St. Lawrence Gap (a five-minute cab ride). There were many excellent restaurants there (especially Josef's).

The beach was very nice and the water was calm. The grounds were beautifully landscaped.

It was very disappointing for such an expensive hotel. Visited: November 2004
Posted by awc_wargames
We found the staff to be polite, but not terribly effective.

The only bar available, the swim-up bar, served drinks at such a slow rate that I was often forced to queue for 15 - 20 minutes. The other advertised bar was closed for most of our stay due (we were told) to a staff shortage.

Our biggest complaint, however, was the fact that the hotel was undergoing extensive maintenance work while the guests were in. The main swimming pool was closed for a whole day while the surrounding area was steam cleaned. And, the generating equipment to do this was situated so close to the (only) bar that it proved impossible to have a quiet drink.

The rooms were very nice, but ours was prone to flooding each time it rained. The management solution was to offer towels to mop up the water!

Also, we were disturbed several times during the afternoons when we were trying to rest because maintenance staff wanted access (changing safes, changing door locks).

The final straw came when we were notified that for three days in succession there would be no power in our wing of the hotel from 0900 hrs - 1600 hrs while electrical work was being carried out. This meant no fan, no air conditioning, no cold/hot drinks etc. It transpired that the bar was also affected by the power cut and thus could only serve cold drinks from the refrigerator.

All in all, this was a very unsatisfactory holiday.

Our nine-day stay was good and met most of our expectations. Visited: May 2004
Posted by clavo
The hotel was situated about quarter of mile off the main road which eliminated any possible road noises on the property. The grounds were lush and nicely maintained centered around a small sectional pool and swim-up bar. We had a one-bedroom suite that was spacious with a balcony. All the rooms were situated such that a view of the beach was possible.

The beach area was nice with clean white sand. However, being situated on the southwest coastline, the water was rough and was red flagged for no swimming twice on our stay. If calm Caribbean water is a requirement, then a resort on the West coast is essential. The tennis court was reasonable, however it could use some repair. We never used the gym equipment and cannot comment

The Lantern restaurant food was adequate, but overpriced. Although general food cost was higher, we found better value in the St. Lawerence Gap area and the outside vendors in Oistins. In addition, there was a lunch truck that came between 12-2 and had good Bajan food. We suggest Josep's in the Gap as nice restaurant with good presentation.

The hotel island tour offered was not that rewarding. Although not as pricy as other tours offered, I would suggest the Island Safari. The catamaran trip on the west coast is essential. We used the Tiami and had a great experience.

As a total value for the money , we were satisfied with our visit and would suggest to others the Bougainvillea, however our overall experience of the island was not as superb as others we have visited.
